The Importance of Eye Exams

Eye exams are comfortable, easy, and, most of all, completely comprehensive. You may discover new issues with your eyes or vision throughout your life that could make it hard to see or hard to see comfortably. Through an eye exam, your optometrist will be able to assess not only the quality and acuity of your vision but also your eyes’ overall health.

But how do you know when to have an eye exam?

Ages 18 to 64

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 64, the AOA recommends having an eye exam every 2 years.  However, we recommend annual exams unless you are between the ages of 25-40 and do not wear glasses or contacts at all, or more frequently if your eyes are considered at-risk.

If you’re over the age of 65, the AOA recommends undergoing an eye exam every year, whether you’re high-risk or not. Around this age, eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration can develop and rob you of your sight.

How Can You Tell if Your Eyes Are At-Risk?

In some cases, eye exam frequency will depend on the overall health of your eyes.

Your eyes may be considered at-risk if:

  • You have medical issues that could impact your eye health (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure).
  • You take medications that could have ocular side-effects.
  • You have ever had eye surgery (e.g., LASIK, PRK).
  • You have a high refractive error.

The Exam Process

Kick-Off Conversation

Before the eye exam, we’ll start with a conversation regarding your health and vision. Your optometrist will confirm your health history, family health history, and more to orientate the exam to fit your needs throughout this conversation.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have! If there is anything you need to enhance your eye care experience, please let us know! Our team is at your service.

Once we’ve reviewed your medical history and answered your questions, we’ll start with the rest of the eye exam.

Following this initial discussion, we’ll test your visual acuity. This part of the eye exam can help your optometrist determine your eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

Optometrists can perform visual acuity testing in different ways, but some of the most common include a phoropter and Snellen eye chart. Once your visual acuity is assessed, it’s time to take a look at your ocular health.

Assessing your ocular health is a crucial part of the eye exam. While using state-the-art technology, including iCare Tonometry, Optos retinal imaging, and ocular coherence tomography, your optometrist can detect even the smallest signs of eye disease.

The most common adult eye diseases include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. All of these, and more, can be detected during a routine eye exam.

The eye exam will conclude with a wrap-up discussion. Your optometrist will discuss your results and go over any prescriptions you may need to promote great vision and eye health.
